The Lassithi Plateau at an altitude of 850 m. Is the largest in Crete and the only continuous human settlement throughout the year. The livestock and agriculture were the main occupations of the inhabitants since ancient times. The plateau is known for its picturesque windmills anymore. The 50s and 60s the plateau was one of the first wind farms in Europe.
 There were about 16.000 windmills that pumped groundwater, where irrigated their crops of inhabitants. Today it has turned into a huge garden, which even a few years ago was supplied with water from the waters that drew thousands of windmills. Around the plateau there are 17 villages. Starting from the northern entrance of the plateau after we meet Pinakiano Lagos villages Tzermiado, Farsari, Marmaketo, Agios Konstantinos, Lassithi Inside, Inside Lasithaki, Ag. George Koudoumalia, Avrakonte, Kaminaki, Magoulas, Cold, Back, Agios Charalambos, Kato Metochi.
Many of its inhabitants during the winter they migrate to villages of Heraklion area and return spring. Their main occupation is agriculture and complementary crafts and tourism.




To the nearby villages there are hotels and restaurants, so visitors have the opportunity to host and enjoy the wonderful view of the plateau and beyond !! The natural beauty of this area is unique.
