The Gorge of Samaria

    The gorge of Samaria

Samaria or the Samaria Gorge is one of the main attractions in Crete. Every tourist who visits Crete, either already heard or will soon hear about this beautiful canyon, the "valley", as they call Samaria locals from admiration for its beauty, but also to stand in relation to other smaller gorges in Crete.
The Samaria Gorge is located in the southern part of Chania in western Crete and most of the fall in Sfakia municipality.
The gorge starts Xyloskalo (altitude 1227 m.), On the plateau of Omalos and ends in the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the south coast.

In the gorge you will encounter unique species of plants and animals protected by international conventions. It is reported that in gorge there are 450 kinds of plants and according to the law aren't allowed to remove anything from Samaria area, thereby to protect the fragile ecosystem.
The village of Samaria is located just before the middle of the gorge and was evacuated in 1962. The village of Samaria is a good opportunity to admire the traditional Cretan architecture.
In the gorge is not impossible to meet famous residents, its wild goats of Crete. The path in Samaria is well marked throughout its length and is considered the most walked path across Greece. Getting lost is probably an impossible and anyway constantly moving in a human stream. There are fountains in various places, like restrooms, as well as medical care.

The cumulative duration of the trip to the Samaria gorge is 4-8 hours depending on your pace. Six hours is the usual time, especially if you make several stops for photos and to enjoy the amazing natural landscape. However if you do not feel strong enough for this entire route, there is the alternative of the "lazy way", as called by the tour operators. The short route is certainly an easy way to feel the magic of the Samaria gorge, but certainly not all.
The entrance to Samaria shall bear a cheap ticket and permitted from mid-April until the end of October. When you open the Canyon for visitors depends on the weather. A heavy rain can cause them responsible not to allow entry to the public to avoid accidents from falling stones or overflowing of the river flowing through the canyon.
