Vai, the Exotic Palm !!


The palm Vai is one of the most popular sights in Crete and attracts thousands of visitors every summer. It's still one of the most beautiful and special locations throughout the Mediterranean and is located 94 km northeast of Agios Nikolaos and 24km east of Sitia. Vai "discovered" by hippies who were persecuted in the early 70s from Matala and found in the area, looking for new shelter. 
By early 1980 it had become a permanent camp site. It spans approximately 600 acres with 5,000 old trees. According to tradition, all those palm trees sprouted as Arabs pirates hurled the stones from the dates they ate the desert landscape of eastern Crete. Today it is considered one of the most beautiful areas in Crete and the beach carrying the Blue Flag of the European Union. One of the elements that make it unique is the fact that the species of palm trees that surround the area is only in the Canary Islands and Vai. In developing these has helped very sand beach with impressive are the rare plants that have made their appearance. The beach of Vai is a sandy beach, with fine golden sand and pebbles, where visitors can enjoy swimming, sun and endless views that  formed in his eyes.

The beach is located 200 meters from the parking area and is enclosed, like the forest, in an effort to protect the area. It is well organized and has sun loungers, umbrellas, and wooden paths to anyone walking comfortably on the beach, but the palm trees offer free shade to anyone he could stretch the things of. The beach is organized by enabling swimmers to participate in water sports. After such a busy day, the ideal is that visitors can be taste traditional dishes in restaurants and enjoy their coffee in cafes on the frame. Apart fron the beautiful beach of Vai there are other, smaller and quieter on the north for the lovers of calmness and 'loneliness'. Another nearby destination that can be visited, is the archaeological site of Itanos, about two kilometers north of the palm, which is the ancient city sunk into the sea. In the area of Vai, there are no hotels or apartments. But you can stay to hotels, in Palekastro, where located 10 km south of Vai or to hotels of Sitia city, if you want to be more central.
